Criterion A: Knowing & Understanding

This criterion tests how well you know and can use scientific knowledge: facts, concepts, terminology and laws. Top marks come from explaining ideas and applying them to unfamiliar situations — not just recalling them.

How it's marked

  • 1–2: Recall a few facts with big gaps.
  • 3–4: State scientific knowledge with some accuracy.
  • 5–6: Describe knowledge and apply it in familiar situations.
  • 7–8: Explain knowledge and apply it to solve problems in unfamiliar situations.
